From Individual To Church
Pentecost Sunday: From Individuals to Church
Opening Question
Tell the group about a time you unexpectedly felt deeply connected to people — a team, a family, a church, a moment, even around a dinner table. What made it meaningful?
Read Together
Read Acts 2:1–13 and Acts 2:37–42
01. “He Will.”
In the sermon, we talked about how Jesus tells the disciples there are things only “the Father alone” knows. Some questions remain unanswered, yet Jesus still asks us to trust him.
Reflection:
Which unanswered question or unresolved situation is hardest for you to trust God with right now?
Follow-up:
How does the resurrection of Jesus change — even slightly — the way you hold that question?
02. “Not by might… but by My Spirit.”
The disciples looked unimpressive on paper, yet God chose them to build the Church.
Reflection:
Where are you most tempted to believe that success, worth, or spiritual maturity comes from performance, competence, productivity, image, or control?
Follow-up:
What would dependence on the Holy Spirit actually look like in that area of your life?
03. Together Before Power
Before the Spirit was poured out, the disciples spent ten days together in prayer, vulnerability, and waiting.
Reflection:
What keeps genuine community difficult for you personally?
Possible examples:
staying busy
fear of vulnerability
church hurt
independence
exhaustion
conflict avoidance
feeling like you don’t belong
Follow-up:
When do you most tend to isolate yourself?
04. Difference Without Division
Pentecost did not erase differences — God spoke through them. Different languages. Different gifts. One body.
Reflection:
Have you ever experienced a Christian community where differences were handled well? What made it healthy?
Follow-up:
What kinds of differences are hardest for you to stay connected through: politics, personality, theology, culture, generation, communication style, etc.?
05. “You were made to be a me, but a we.”
The sermon challenged the idea of “just me and Jesus.”
Reflection:
What is one way you genuinely need other people in this season of your life?
Follow-up:
What makes it hard to admit that need out loud?
06. The Spirit Gives Gifts
Pentecost is not mainly about hype or spectacle — it’s about the Spirit giving grace and gifts to build up the Church.
Reflection:
Who in your life has used their gifts in a way that deeply encouraged or strengthened your faith?
Follow-up:
What gift or burden do you sense God may be growing in you right now for the sake of others?
Practice This Week
Set aside five quiet minutes each day and pray:
“Come, Holy Spirit.
Who needs encouragement from me today?”
Pay attention to who comes to mind — and follow through.
Closing Prayer
Come, Holy Spirit.
Teach us to trust you.
Free us from isolation.
Unite us as your people.
And fill us again with your presence.
Amen.
